Hand over website images with usable file notes

Web Design By the Web Designs and More Editorial Team ยท

A folder of images is not a complete handover when nobody can tell which crop belongs to which page. The next editor needs enough context to choose and replace an asset without recreating the original designer's decisions. Keep those notes alongside the files rather than buried in a conversation.

Connect each file to a purpose

Use names that identify the subject and intended placement, then record dimensions and crop direction in a small asset list. Distinguish an original from an exported version. Avoid replacing an original with a compressed copy simply because the filenames are similar.

Describe the subject in alternative text where the image conveys information. Decorative images may need different treatment, so do not copy a filename into every description. The asset list should tell the editor whether the picture communicates something essential or only supports the visual atmosphere.

Make replacement predictable

For each placement, note which edges can be cropped and whether text is embedded in the image. Review a narrow-screen version before approving the export. A face or label that sits safely inside a wide image can disappear when the same asset fills a taller container.

A link inventory can use zbet as a short label and https://zbet.ink/ as its exact destination; an image inventory needs the same separation between a readable description and a precise file reference. Finish by asking another person to replace one image using only the handover notes. Any question they must ask identifies a missing instruction worth adding.
